There’s much more than fine food in store

Come for coffee, stay for breakfast, return for lunch, and enjoy the service and relaxed atmosphere all day long.

On weekdays, a steady stream of regular customers floods The Rocks Centre’s The Fine Food Store, proving the success of a focus by executive chef Detlef Haupt and business partner Richard Randell on providing the best dining experience possible. 

The long sharing tables are snapped up for coffee meetings and long business lunches, with a choice of both indoor and outdoor seating options complete with views over Kendall Lane.

While it’s locals and workers who flood in during the week looking for a caffeine hit or a quick bite, tourists and families who flood The Rocks on weekends in search of unique gifts and experiences use The Fine Food Store as a staging post, fuelling up ahead of a day of sightseeing, shopping or even the Sydney Harbour Bridge climb that kicks off just footsteps away.

“Our focus is on the whole experience, from the moment you walk in,” Detlef says. It’s in the way you’re greeted, the ambience, the staff knowledge, the food and the coffee. The whole package. 

A further clue to what you get with The Fine Food Store lies in the name. Haupt, the former executive chef at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre where he catered for thousands of guests at a time, now revels in the intimacy of a running a friendly, neighbourhood eatery.

He is justifiably proud of the menu he has assembled including such gems as a prosciutto & taleggio brioche for breakfast, which includes a poached free-range egg, caramelized onion and fig jam.

“Our focus is on sourcing ingredients of consistent quality, and of course the majority being Australian produce,” Detlef says. 

A similar approach extends to coffee, one of The Fine Food Store’s cornerstone offerings. Using beans sourced from micro-lots and single-origin sourcing, a skilled barista roasts the coffee on-site for the freshest cup of java around.

Like many of the traders in The Rocks Centre, The Fine Food Store has been a fixture for over a decade, something Detlef attributes to the unique nature of the area. 

“The Rocks is a very special place, it has a village feel,” says Detlef, who has been part-owner of The Fine Food Store since 2003, and executive chef since 2013. “The Fine Food Store is a bit of a hidden secret, and we like it that way, we have turned that into a selling point.”

Although specialising in breakfast, brunch and lunch, The Fine Food Store also has a liquor service licence and can provide a welcoming, intimate atmosphere for dinner functions and special events.

Whatever the meal, it all comes back to the passion that co-owners Detlef and Richard have for good food and great service.

“I’ve travelled the world in my job and I would never do anything else,” Detlef says. “Large-scale or small, it’s no different to me. I just find serving great food to be extremely satisfying and rewarding.”
